Biographical history
John MacPhail was a Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, carriage maker with a carriage factory and livery stable at 159 Kent Street (Kent and Prince Streets), from approximately 1864 to 1911. He also administered several rental properties in Charlottetown.

The fonds consists of an account book, "Ledger D", which contains approximately 164 pages of account records of clients' transactions with John MacPhail's carriage making business and for rental accounts of several properties in the Charlottetown area. The entries consist of the clients' names and usually their addresses, the date of the transaction, details of supplies and services provided, amounts charged, and amounts paid. The rental records list the renters' names, in some cases the location of the property being rented, the time period of the rental, and the amount charged and paid.
