History

Charles Hensley, son of Rev. Edward Hensley, was born ca. 1790. In 1806 he joined the British Navy where he served for several decades and attained the rank of Commander. Following his retirement in 1841, he and his wife, Louisa Margaretta Echalez y Portalta, and family moved to Prince Edward Island. Here he established an estate called Newlands in Charlottetown Royalty and became active as a landowner and businessman. He was also appointed to the Legislative Council. His son Joseph became a lawyer and followed in his father's political footsteps, eventually becoming Premier of PEI for a brief period in 1869. Charles Hensley returned to England in later years.
