Notice biographique

Helen Bayfield was born in 1839 in Quebec City, Quebec, daughter of Admiral Henry Wolsey Bayfield (1795-1885) and his wife Fanny Amelia Wright (1813-1891). Admiral Bayfield was born in Kingston upon Hull, England and joined the Royal Navy at age 11. He enjoyed a distinguished career as a naval officer and hydrographic surveyor. He was stationed in Quebec City for a number of years and carried out numerous surveys throughout eastern Canada. He was commissioned to survey the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River and many coastal areas in the maritime provinces. He met and married Fanny Wright, daughter of Charles Wright, Royal Engineers in Quebec City. They were married there in 1838. Admiral Bayfield relocated his office to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in 1841 from where his surveying of the coasts of Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia occurred. His family settled on Queen Street in Charlottetown and joined Charlottetown society. In 1856, Bayfield retired from active surveying. Other children of Admiral and Mrs. Bayfield were Henry (1840-1856), Charles F. (1842-1919), Horace Osborne (1843-1917), Edward (Ned) (1847-1926), and Fanny Gertrude Mary (1852-?). Helen Bayfield died, unmarried in 1867.

Présentation du contenu

The Helen Bayfield photograph album contains 295 photographic images on 121 pages believed to have been assembled by Helen Bayfield (1839-1867). The album appears to have been assembled after the collection of images as the dates of the images do not follow a chronological sequence. Some images are signed by Henry Cundall (1833-1916), a land surveyor and estate agent of Charlottetown, who practiced photography and was a friend of the Bayfield family. Many of the images are identified. The album includes studio and amateur portraits of several Charlottetown individuals and families including several of the Bayfield, Orlebar, DeBlois, Peters and Grubb families. Several images of Governor George Dundas and his wife Mary Dundas appear. Some of the studio portraits are by Notman, Tanton and Martin Studios. Some of the portraits have signatures of the subject written on a separate piece of paper which have been affixed below or beside the image. The album includes views of Charlottetown as well as scenes of Montreal, Halifax, Fredericton, and Edinburgh, Scotland. The album includes images of Charlottetown buildings including Fanningbank or Government House, the residence of the Lieutenant Governor; Falconwood Asylum, Sidmount House, Province House, Devenport Cottage, Kilburn House, St. Paul's Anglican and Trinity United Church. Several views are of Montreal subjects appear in the album including the residence and area around 23 Durocher Street. Some images have not been identified.
