Historique

James Douglas Haszard, Prince Edward Island's first native journalist, was born in Charlottetown on June 27, 1797. Apprenticed to his uncle, James D. Bagnall, then King's Printer, at an early age, he continued in this occupation all his life. He established the P.E.I. Register in 1823, publishing it until 1830 when he became King's Printer. When he was replaced in this position in 1850 he began and published Haszard's Gazette, an enterprise carried on by his son George.

As well as being a printer and a journalist, Haszard established the first clothing mill in the colony, had interests in the insurance business, owned a book and stationary store, and leased several properties in Charlottetown and environs. In addition he was very active in community life, participating in various institutions such as the Royal Agricultural Society, Temperance Hall and the Mechanic's Institute. He died in August 1875.
