History

George Herbert Owen Haszard was born in 1851 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, the son of George Thomas and Margaret (Owen) Haszard. Both his father and his grandfather were publishers of the "Royal Gazette"; his father also published "The Protestant" and founded the "Charlottetown Patriot". G. Herbert entered the printing and binding business in 1874 in partnership with P.S. McGowan. In 1880 he took over the business alone until 1891 when he formed a business association with S.C. Moore to become the firm of Haszard & Moore. Haszard was also an avid horticulturist with a particular interest in dahlias which he exhibited at local and regional flower shows. He had a conservatory on Hillsborough Square and advertised as a dealer in decorative and flowering plants, seeds, bulbs, etc. In August of 1889 G. Herbert Haszard married Edith Stowe Moore with whom he had three children, Helen Margaret, Freida Elanie, and Gordon Thomas. He died in 1905.
