Martin Griffin was born at Lot 7, Prince Edward Island, in 1859 or 1860. He taught school for 35 years in various districts such as West Point, Knutsford, Coleman, Carleton, etc. He was married to Caroline Moreshead with whom he had eight children. Besides operating a small farm and a grocery store in O'Leary he pursued as active career in photography producing tintypes and glass plate negatives of local people and events. As well as operating a studio in O'Leary, he also travelled through the area as far as Wellington setting up a darkroom in a tent where he lived and developed his plates in trays. Martin Griffin died in O'Leary on 25 February 1940 at the age of 80.
