Biographical history

Glenaladale Barn was part of the Glenaladale estate in Tracadie. This may have been the largest barn structure of its time built on Prince Edward Island. The building of the barn was financed by Sir William C. MacDonald, grandson of Captain John MacDonald, the founder of the first Scottish Catholic settlement in Prince Edward Island. Sir William C. MacDonald also financed the building of the MacDonald School in Mt. Herbert and renovations to Prince of Wales College.

Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds consists of a ledger giving detailed accounts of monies paid to individuals for services provided in the construction and maintenance of the barn between 1884 and 1893. Names, nature of work, and amount received for payment, are included with most entries. The accounts were kept by James Hodgson who was possibly Mr. MacDonald's agent or foreman.
