Biographical history
Elsa Kelsey, model for the famous New York "Gibson Girl," was married to Harry Warwick, actor, who was reputed to be a scion of the noble Warwick family of England. In the early years of the twentieth century Harry and Elsa were much involved in the theatre and travelled the world. Initially attracted to Prince Edward Island by the actor's colony at Abell's Cape, they bought a small cottage on the Fortune River and returned to it many summers over the ensuing years. After Harry's death, Elsa returned to the Island and took up year round occupancy of the cottage until her death in the 1950s.
Custodial history
These nitrate negatives were found in the Warwick cottage following Elsa's death by the daughter-in-law of A. W. Mitchell, Island photographer, who was a friend of the family. The Mitchells also owned a small cottage in Fortune. The negatives stayed in the possession of the grandson of A. W. Mitchell until their donation to the Public Archives and Records Office. A selection was made from the original negatives and the originals destroyed for reasons of safety.
Scope and content
This fonds consists of photographs which include images of the Fortune area including fishing and boating scenes as well as shots of the Warwick cottage and gardens and of groups of people. There are also shots of Elsa and Harry Warwick, some of the latter being of his stage roles.
