Scope and content
The fonds contains a microfilm copy of the 1890 Roman Catholic census as well as a transcription of, and index to, the 40 parishes contained in that census. The Roman Catholic Church on Prince Edward Island undertook periodic censuses of its parishioners. This census was taken during the spring and summer of 1890, presumably in anticipation of the consecration of James Charles MacDonald as Bishop of the Diocese of Charlottetown following the death of Bishop Peter MacIntyre on 30 April 1891.
Records are missing for St. Malachy's parish in Kinkora and St. Peter's parish at Seven Mile Bay. The names of parishioners in Lots 48 and 49 were microfilmed as a separate parish entry following Lot 11 on the microfilm. In the transcription, these appear as a section of the Charlottetown parish and have been so indexed. Entries in the census include name, age, communion, confirmation, and occupation. In some parishes the wife's maiden name is also recorded. By request of the Diocese, a remarks column was edited in both the microfilm and the transcription.
