Historique
John Darrach, son of Malcolm Darrach of Covehead, Prince Edward Island, was born on 29 April 1817. He married Elizabeth Semple (b.1826), daughter of James Semple and Mary Inglis of New Glasgow on 18 February 1847 with whom he had 9 children: Malcolm Scott, James Semple, William Alexander, Duncan, John Amon, Elizabeth Mary, Janet Ann, Alexander Campbell, Sarah Jane. A shipbuilder by trade, in 1864 Darrach built the brig "Pakeha" and in December of that year set sail with a crew and 32 passengers including his wife and family for New Zealand. Settling on 57 hectares of waste land at Matakana, he proceeded to build two vessels in partnership with William Bagnall who had also emigrated on the "Pakeha". In 1866, he purchased a farm, later known as "Rosebank", at the tip of the Mahurangi Peninsula and built 19 vessels in the next 14 years. He died on 27 October 1897.
