Historique
William Creed was born in Limerick, Ireland ca. 1743. Taking his share of an inherited fortune, William emigrated to North America. He initially settled in the New England states as he had relations living there. In 1767, William relocated to Prince Edward Island and settled in the Alberton area. He then moved to the settlement at Three Rivers, present day Brudenell, Cardigan, and Montague, ca. 1775 where he found employment as the harbor master. William sailed his own vessels and he continued to go to sea after moving to Three Rivers. He did business with firms in the New England states and Canada. Creed later established a store at Creed's Point, present day Wightman's Point near Lower Montague, where he lived. He dealt in goods such as tobacco, molasses, liquor, and sugar. William married the widow of the former Harbor Master, Mr. David Higgin's, Elizabeth Prince, ca. 1785, and they had three sons: Joseph, Bennett (1788-1868), and Samuel (1790-?). William also worked as a road surveyor in the Lower Montague and Sturgeon area. He was elected into the PEI Provincial Government ca.1800. In 1809 he caught Cholera and died in Charlottetown. He is buried in the Old Protestant Cemetery on University Avenue in Charlottetown.
