History

The 421 ton barque "Claribel" was built in Souris, Prince Edward Island, and registered in Charlottetown on 14 September 1876. The ship was owned by Samuel Cambridge Owens with the Master at that time being Peter Graham. The ownership changed several times in the following years. Registry closed on this ship in the Port of Charlottetown on 24 February 1894.

During a trip from Charlottetown to Hamilton, Bermuda, December 1890, with a shipment of potatoes, oats, horses, and other merchandise, the ship ran into bad weather. Official surveyors evaluated and reported on the subsequent damage. Some of the cargo had to be discharged and warehoused while repairs were undertaken.
