Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of diaries kept by J. Edward Macdonald of two voyages: one as 3rd Officer on the Canadian Government Auxiliary Barkentine "Arctic" on a scientific expedition to "force the North West passage" between June 1910 and October 1911 and a second as second mate on the Nova Scotian three masted schooner "Coral Leaf" from New York to Cayenne, French Guyana and on to St. Andrew's Bay Florida during November and December 1911. While journal entries in the latter case are brief and sporadic, the earlier trip is carefully documented with daily entries concerning the weather, sailing activities, soundings, the thickness of ice, other vessels sighted, wildlife and land masses observed, relations between crew members, descriptions of the native population and the social and other activities of the crew, particularly when wintering over in Arctic Bay.
