Historique
The Canteen Fund, sometimes referred to as the Imperial Canteen Fund, provided relief to World War I soldiers, sailors, and their dependents. Monies were derived from the Prince Edward Island share of this national fund. This was invested in a loan with the Provincial Government and the accrued interest administered and distributed locally by a Board of Trustees at their discretion, to those below commissioned rank (and their families) and who were not receiving other government relief. The Board reported to the national Department of Soldier's Civil Re-establishment which was responsible for the administration and disposal of canteen funds, and to the Department of Pensions and National Health. The Chairman of the local Board of Trustees for the duration of its existence between 1926 and 1938 was E. H. Strong. Other board members included D. F. Tierney, W. A. McLaren, Leo Bradley, and Fred F. May.
