The series consists of papers relating to various business dealings of the Macdonald family in Georgetown and the surrounding area, Prince Edward Island. Public business activities including operation of general stores, importing and exporting, shipbuilding, fishing mackerel and fishing and canning lobster. Some papers in the series also include private business activities relating to the running of the various Macdonald family households and properties in Panmure Island and Georgetown and family members’ accounts with the family store. The series has been divided into three subseries:
Subseries1: Ledgers
Subseries2: Daily journals
Subseries3: Correspondence, accounts, etc.
The Macdonald family was involved in a number of business activities prior to and following their immigration to Prince Edward Island. From their arrival in Prince Edward Island between May and November 1806, the family was involved in running general stores in Panmure Island, Georgetown, Brudenell, and Montague at various times; shipbuilding; shipping (importing manufactured goods and exporting produce such as oats and potatoes as well as lumber); mackerel fishing; and lobster fishing and canning. The family operated various business activities under a variety of firm names, including Andrew Macdonald & Sons, Angus and Hugh Macdonald, James and A. Macdonald, A. A. Macdonald & Bros., and Macdonald Bros. Ltd.
