Notice biographique

William Schurman was born ca. 1743 in New Rochelle, New York to Jacob and Jane (Parcot) Schurman. He was married twice, first to Jane Bonnet, and second to Elizabeth Hyatt. His sympathies being with the British in the American War of Independence he moved with his family to Prince Edward Island in 1783 via Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Settling in the Bedeque area, he quickly became a leader in the community, holding offices such as justice of the peace, and overseer of roads. He also served one term in the Legislature in 1785. Throughout his lifetime he was a shipowner and builder, farmer, lumberman and miller. He exchanged his lumber for merchandise which, along with produce from his farm, he then sold to his neighbours from a store in his home. He dealt in all manner of goods from tobacco and liquor, flour, tea, sugar, salt, potatoes, grain, meat and fish to hardwares, stationary and dry goods. He apparently also supplied some cooperage and blacksmith services. William Schurman died on 15 September 1819.

Historique de la conservation

This volume escaped a fire in William Schurman's first home on Prince Edward Island nd has been kept, first by his son Peter, who lived on the homestead property, and then by successive generations of Schurmans to date.

Présentation du contenu

This fonds consists of an account book containing credit sales made by William Schurman to some two hundred customers from 1784 until his death in 1819. After that date accounts appear to have been kept by his son Peter who was also one of his executors. Entries after the 1830s are few. Names of debtors are given followed by an itemized listing of commodities purchased and their cost. Settlements of debt are also recorded including manner of payment whether in cash, produce or labour. Early entries include accounts of William Schurman's work done for others.

Classement

The volume is arranged primarily in chronological order although some later entries, particularly for payment, seem to have been interspersed with earlier entries leading to some confusion as to the exact location of pages and sections which were loose when received by the Archives
