Scope and content

As part of its efforts in carrying out the Sustainable Agriculture Assistance Program, the Prince Edward Island Department of Agriculture, together with the Institute of Island Studies, developed The Best of the Past project to gather data on traditional sustainable farming practices that could be evaluated in today's agriculture. The project was carried out in the summer and fall of 1988 and in January of 1989. This fonds consists of 42 oral interviews and a published report. The interviews are predominantly with full-time farmers representing all areas of the Island. The focus of the interviews is on agricultural practices as they existed up to the 1950's before the large-scale introduction of chemicals and mechanization. Subjects discussed include the family farm, cultivation, insect and fungus control, folklore traditions, mixed farming and others. The report, containing an overview, interview summaries and annotated bibliography, was prepared by Wayne MacKinnon and Elinor Vass.
