Notice biographique

Alberta (Bertie) Emily Stewart was born on 18 February 1896, the daughter of Samuel Charles Stewart (1862-1936) and Harriet Burston Boswall (1864-1951). Her siblings included Laura (1890-1940) who married Robert Bruce MacCallum (1887-1977), Mable (b. 1892), Boswall John (1894-1975), Ruby who married Vernon Dennis, and Blanche who died in infancy. The family lived and farmed on the St. Peters Road at Dunstaffnage. Bertie attended Prince of Wales College and afterwards taught school at Donaldston where she boarded with the Court family. Throughout her teaching career she also taught in Dunstaffnage, Mt. Herbert and East Royalty. She married Roy S. Dennis, brother of Vernon, and son of Enoch Dennis and Eliza Squarebriggs who lived several farms away in Lot 34. After the marriage the couple resided in Massachusetts for a time before returning to Dunstaffnage. In 1959 they moved to Charlottetown. Alberta and Roy had three children, Wilfred, Irene and Muriel. Alberta (Stewart) Dennis died on 16 May 1974 at the Wood Convalescent Home in Charlottetown.

Présentation du contenu

The fonds consists of a daily entry diary kept by Bertie Stewart (age 19) during her last months at Prince of Wales College and her first months of teaching at Donaldston school and five photographs of Bertie and the Samuel Charles Stewart family. The diary contains few references either to her schooling or teaching experiences but concentrates on her daily home and social life. She participated in the usual housework chores of cooking, washing, and knitting but also lent a hand with the planting, milking, haying, digging potatoes and turnips, and picking berries.. Social events centred around trips to town, church activities, community festivals, visits to and from neighbours, occasional parties, clam bakes, basket and pie socials. She kept close track of the activities of her family members and mentioned special occasions such as births, marriages, illnesses, and deaths in the community as well. As it was the war years she also was active in the Red Cross and attended Patriotic meetings.
