Although Lumsden lived in Murray Harbour most of his life, he also worked briefly in Westville, New Glasgow, and Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. In the 1890s, Lumsden and his brother Willard travelled to the western U.S. where Elliot lost his arm in a shooting accident. Willard remained in the United States. The Lumsden collection includes several images of groups of ordinary working class people in and around Murray Harbour.
