| Many lighthouse keepers also farmed or fished. The lamps were lit at sunset and extinguished at daylight. A lighthouse keeper was responsible for shining the reflector, cleaning the lamp flue, checking the kerosene supply, trimming the wick of the lamp, and monitoring weather conditions. The schedule for lamp lighting was strictly maintained April through December. Lighthouse keeper appointments were often lifelong and passed down through the family. | | Previous<<< |
