Library staff Mary Newson and Agnes MacQuaid check out books for patrons. Technology has made rapid advances in the control of library holdings. Cataloguing, circulation, statistics and other record keeping are all completed or tracked by computer. On-line catalogues have replaced card catalogues and microfiche records in many libraries including the Confederation Centre Public Library. AbbyCat, the P.E.I. Provincial Library Catalogue has been operational since Fall 1997. In its first year of use, there were 3,600 self-renewals and 62,896 requests. This past year, 2003-2004, library patrons searched the on-line catalogue close to 200,000 times.
