PARO R.G. 10, Vol. 110, File 1 (Department of Education fonds)
Architectural sketches by James E. Harris, ca. 1928

The Harris Library was renovated in 1934 to accommodate the donation of 4,000 books it received through the Carnegie Demonstration Project. Jean Gill was appointed as Chief Librarian in 1934. Prince Edward Island was selected as a Carnegie Demonstration Project which established public library service in communities across the province. The project was funded from 1933-1936 by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. By the end of the project more than 20 libraries were in place and 40,000 books were available. Today there are 26 branch libraries. Nora Bateson was the first provincial librarian who travelled the province convincing communities to participate in the project and to promote awareness and use of the libraries.
