Harris Memorial Gallery and Public Library, ca. 1950s

Aerial view of the rear of the Harris Library showing its location on Grafton Street, near Queen Street. After years of lobbying and planning for a free public library, the Harris Memorial Library and Art Gallery opened in 1930. Residents of Charlottetown and surrounding communities as well as students of Prince of Wales College and St. Dunstan's University were very pleased. The Legislative Library was established in 1773 although it was available for many years to Legislative Assembly members only. As early as 1825 there appears to have been subscription libraries in Charlottetown and other communities -- available to those who could pay an annual fee.
