Beach Grove Inn, North River, circa 1920s

Operated by Souris native R.H. Sterns, who had previously operated the Victoria Hotel in Charlottetown, the Beach Grove Inn was built in 1921 and could accommodate 125 guests. The grounds included tennis courts, lawn, driveway, and nine-hole golf course. In its 2nd year of operation, it hosted 65 guests from many American cities including Honolulu and as far away as New Zealand. Sterns died suddenly in 1935. From the fall of 1939 the inn was used as a training headquarters for Island military personnel and later as accommodation for inmates of the overcrowded Provincial Infirmary. In 1946 the 120-acre estate was purchased by the provincial government. Today the area is the site of Beach Grove Home seniors residence and Forestry District office.
