| The fox farming industry began in 1890 in western Prince Edward Island when Charles Dalton (1850-1933) and Robert Oulton (1835-1920) joined together in partnership and established the first successful fox ranch on Cherry Island, which Oulton owned. It was on this ranch that the first "jewels" of the fox farming industry, the silver-black fox, a mutant strain of the ordinary wild red fox, were successfully raised to maturity.
