"Since our last the mercury in the Thermometer (Fahrenheit’s scale) has been as low as 12 under 0. The coldest day last winter the mercury fell no lower than eight under 0. In the winters of 1789 and 1790 it was twenty four below 0" – Royal Gazette, 28 January 1792, p. 4
