Craswell's photography career began at age 14 when he worked as an apprentice in a photographer's studio. By 1909 he was working for James A.S. Bayer in his studio on Grafton Street in Charlottetown. After working as an assistant accountant for the Charlottetown Steam Navigation Company, Craswell opened his own photo studio at 137 Great George Street. The Craswell Portrait Studio took over the Bayer Studio in the 1930s at 163 Great George Street (located on the west side of what is now University Avenue) in the block between Grafton and Kent Streets.
