Original Charlottetown Camera Club 1967 description:
"The Dominion promised by the terms of Union ‘Efficient steam service for the conveyance of mails and passengers,’ and ‘Continuous communication’ with the mainland. This condition was not satisfactorily fulfilled until forty years later when the ice breaker, ‘Prince Edward Island’ went into service. Her first run was on October 16, 1917.
