Group at beach in bathing suits, 1890-1895

The Guardian newspaper made special note of this image when the Camera Club held the original exhibit in May 1967: “One of the most amusing photographs shows groups of 1890 Victorian ladies gleefully splashing on an Island beach in what looks like complete wardrobe. Actually they are wearing bathing suits” (Guardian, 27 May 1967).

Original Charlottetown Camera Club 1967 description:
"A select bathing party - About 1890, many types of bathing suits existed, short sleeves were general, also knee-length trousers with a skirt on top were all the rage. Dark colours were usual, with braid and lace decorations. Notice a few women in the picture with stockings on."
