Mixed Freight Crossing Pisquid River, 1949

The Short Line was built between 1929 and 1930, and connected the communities from Lake Verde to Maple Hill. Besides connecting these communities to the larger rail system, the Short Line also aimed to divert heavy freight cars from the aging Hillsborough Bridge and over the Pisquid River, allowing the continued transportation of freight to the eastern part of the Island. One such mixed freight train is seen here crossing the Pisquid River on route to Mount Stewart from Lake Verde to Mount Stewart, in the summer of 1949.
