Train at Railroad Crossing, 1968 |
|
This 1968 photo shows a train at a crossroads passing eastwards through Peakes Station. It was in the 1960s that the railway system on PEI began to decline. Freight was more easily and efficiently transferred through the use of trucks, and passengers were finding it more convenient to use their own automobiles in lieu of waiting for a train. Sections of the railroad began to close. Eventually the Canadian National Railways would decide to pull out of PEI all together. On 28 December 1989, the last trains boarded the railway ferry, the MV John Hamilton Gray, and never returned. However, the story does not end there. Following the former train route Islanders created the Confederation Trail, a picturesque, tip-to-tip walking and cycling trail in the summer and snowmobile trail in the winter. This trail is a living monument to the railway network that connected the Island for so many years. | Previous<<< |
