Beginning in the fall of 1917, the Canadian National Railways offered continuous train service from Prince Edward Island to the main land through the use of ice breaking car ferries, which were equipped to carry the train cars over the Northumberland Strait. The S.S. Charlottetown was built in 1931 and had the overall length of 342 feet, breadth of 59 feet and draft of 19 ¼ feet. It could accommodate 40 automobiles and had 3 railways tracks which accommodated 16 freight cars. There was also a news stand and a first class restaurant on board.
