"During the summer, the Main Library was whitened, tinted and renovated. One of the rooms of the 'Upper Library' was partly cleaned up and re-arranged by a temporary assistant. Some valuable pamphlets and old Journals were found, and it is hoped that the work in the debris upstairs (amongst which are plans, charts, journals and archives generally) may be continued in the coming session." (Report on the Library of the Legislative Assembly, 1902-1903)

It would be sixty-one years before "work in the debris" truly began. Passed in 1964 and proclaimed the following year, An Act to Establish the Public Archives of Prince Edward Island created "an office... for the safe-keeping, classification, indexing and calendaring" of records both public and private. Fifty years on, the work of collecting, preserving, and making accessible the Island's documentary heritage continues.
