Market building, ca. 1870

The third market building erected on Queen Square opened in January of 1867. It was designed by cabinet maker and city councillor, Mark Butcher and was known as the Butcher Market House. The ground floor was divided into 3 sections: one for butchers, another for country produce, fruit and fowl, and the third for meal and flour. The upper story was finished as a public hall. The building also accommodated City Hall from 1872 - 1888. In 1876 an extension was made to provide space for a police station and a belfry to house a new fire bell. The market was destroyed by fire in December of 1902.
