St. Dunstan's Cathedral and Bishop's Palace, ca. 1876

In 1843, a wooden church was erected on Great George Street. It was called St. Dunstan's and served as a place of worship for Charlottetown's Roman Catholic residents. It was the second of four Roman Catholic churches to occupy this space. Next to St. Dunstan's was the Bishop's Palace. This building, begun in 1872, was not occupied by the Bishop until September of 1875. The Bishop''s Palace remains to this day, but the 1843 church was hauled away to make way for a stone cathedral which began in 1897.
