“In the Straits of Canso-nearing St. Georges Bay Aug 19th, 1912.”

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Islanders left Prince Edward Island to move to the Boston, Massachusetts area, or “Boston States” as they were known. These Islanders left for various reasons, including better economic opportunities. However, many Islanders chose Boston because of its similar culture and heritage to Prince Edward Island, and because sea and rail travel between Boston and P.E.I. were cheap and easily accessible. These Islanders were known as “outmigrants”.
