The first steamship that entered Charlottetown harbour was the “Richard Smith” in 1830. One popular steamship line between Prince Edward Island and Boston was called the Boston and Colonial Steamship Co. This later became the Plant Line, when Henry Plant purchased the company. Another local steamship line was the Charlottetown Steamship Navigation Co. Advertisements for these steamship sailings were usually printed daily in Island papers, such as "The Guardian", "The Patriot" and "The Examiner". The Plant Line advertisements for travel between Boston and Prince Edward Island were usually printed from May until September to encourage summer travel.
