By the 1920s and 1930s, participation in sport by women living in the province was increasing and becoming more varied. The view that had once persisted of sport as an inherently unfeminine pursuit, too physically demanding for female participants, began to be countered by a growth in new sporting opportunities for women within schools, universities and their local communities. New modes of dress also had a liberating effect, allowing women to take part in physical activity with greater mobility and freedom than they had done in previous years. On Prince Edward Island, sports like hockey, basketball, and softball proved popular among women of the province, with several female teams achieving notable success. The Abegweit Sisters basketball team of Charlottetown was one such example. Awarded the Provincial Championship several times during the 1930s, the team gained recognition beyond the province, being declared in 1933 by the Halifax Herald as "one of the finest [teams] in Eastern Canada".
