Outdoor chores include cutting and sawing wood, separating milk, thrashing, slaughtering pigs, and hauling manure.

Gertrude also recounts visitors' names, passersby, pedlars, mail delivery, and purchasing household supplies and foodstuffs.

Since she doesn't have the opportunity to attend school, Gertrude takes an active interest in the household, farm, neighbourhood and PEI's unpredictable spring weather.

Question for Students

- How would going to school in 1910 be different from going to school today? What has stayed the same?
- From reading her diary, what do you think Gertrude was like?
- Can you find where Gertrude lived on a map?
