Gertrude's parents were George Frederick MacMillan (1864-1942; standing) and Ida Jane Vickerson (1868-1928; seated, right).

Helena "Wilhelmina" (Gertrude's younger sister; seated, left) and Florence Coffin (her cousin who lived with the family, not pictured) went to school,
but Gertrude stayed at home and her diary records homemaking tasks such as baking and sewing.
