According to family members, Gertrude was very ill with diabetes, since insulin was not discovered until the early 1920's.

Other than a sprained ankle, she rarely complained about being sick, only mentioning in passing "a box of pills for me" or Mamma's "letter from Dr. Robinson".

It wasn't until late May of 1910 that she describes being sick.

Questions for Students

- Gertrude doesn't mention her illness until May. If you were not well, would you mention it in your diary?
- What type of girl do you think Gertrude was? What reasons can you give for your answer?
- Are there any words or descriptions in the diary that you don't understand? Ask your teacher or one of the Archives' staff to explain.
- Are there any words in the diary which we have lost from our modern vocabulary?
