Settlers to North America brought with them a whole range of social and political traditions. Many Island immigrants settled in areas where the inhabitants shared the same ethnic, cultural or religious background as themselves, thereby strengthening the traditional values and language of the homeland they had left behind. Such strong family and community ties were important to the successful development of immigrant settlements and contributed greatly to follow-on migration, drawing new waves of emigrants to areas where established social and familial connections existed.
