With the advent of regular steamship services from Britain to North America in the mid-nineteenth century, trans-Atlantic travel became faster and more efficient: by the 1840s an emigrant from Britain could cross the Atlantic in as little as twelve or thirteen days. Promotion of emigrant travel also became increasingly common. Many land agents and ship owners produced advertisements and pamphlets offering would-be emigrants a glowing account of the benefits of immigration to North America. As this advertisement from the Royal Gazette demonstrates, Prince Edward Island was frequently styled as a prosperous and fertile land with a "most healthy climate" and good opportunities to make "a respectable living".
