Church picnic, circa 1900

The church and Sunday School picnic was the social event of the year in many communities. Preparations for the event would have the men setting up the tables and tents the day before, looking after the fires for the tea, while the ladies would prepare and serve the food. Games, races and other contests for prizes would occupy the children. Proceeds from booths selling homemade ice cream, candy, fruit, and drinks would often go toward the building or maintenance of the local church and manse.
