The North Wiltshire embankment, 1898

The rail line was poorly built at first and required constant improvement. Over the life of the line, curves were straightened and grades reduced. One of the biggest changes was the elimination of a long "S" bend at North Wiltshire. An embankment over a valley cut across the "S" and shortened the line. A temporary wooden trestle allowed the fill to be dumped directly from flat cars.
