By the mid 1920s the Hillsborough Bridge was unsafe for heavy loads and a new line from Mt. Stewart to Lake Verde was built to link with Murray Harbour. At the same time rails had been switched from narrow to standard gauge and heavier, locomotives had replaced the light narrow gauge engines. The mixed freight with a passenger/baggage car at the end was the staple of transportation on this line.
