Fishing craft, Souris, P.E.I.

Souris has long been known for its fishery. Sealers were a common sight in the 1840s looking for oil for lamps. Large fleets of American and Nova Scotia schooners fishing for mackerel descended on Souris for provisioning every summer. Trade between Souris and St. Pierre, Halifax, and the Miramichi saw many vessels in port. Souris vessels exported oats, dried and pickled fish, and potatoes. Salt, rum, sugar, tea, coffee, wine and dry goods ranked most numerous amongst the imports.
