School Health on PEI

The Department of Education, Early Learning and Culture, the Department of Health and Wellness, the Comprehensive School Health Research Group at the University of Prince Edward Island, school boards, schools, provincial alliances, community organizations and community volunteers have been working together to support the health and well-being of Island students.

Collective efforts have resulted in a variety of new and strengthened school health initiatives, which support positive health behaviours and contribute to enhanced student success.

Established in 2005, the Pan-Canadian Joint Consortium for School Health (JCSH) is a partnership of federal, provincial, and territorial ministries of education and health from across Canada working together to promote the health of children and youth in the school setting. From 2010-2015, Prince Edward Island is providing leadership to the Pan-Canadian Joint Consortium for School Health (JCSH) by hosting the Secretariat and it's staff.
The JCSH works directly with provincial and territorial representatives to help build the capacity of health and education sectors to work together effectively to promote comprehensive school health.

Students who attend schools implementing a comprehensive school health framework that promotes the health and
well-being of students (encompassing physical, social-psychological, and spiritual dimensions) have higher levels of student life satisfaction, emotional status, self-reported health, and academic performance, as well as a reduction in high-risk behaviors.
