Civic Address Community of NAIL POND
County:Prince County
History:Located 3 miles NW of Tignish in Lot 1. The origin of the name is unclear. In 1765 Samuel Holland records the name as Sandy Inlet, but tradition may have renamed it for "nails" found after a shipwreck in approximately 1825. Other references note, "Noil" (Dutch origin, which had become Acadianized) was the name of a family who settled in PEI during its early history. This may have influenced the name of the area as well. The Mi'kmaq name for this area was "Nioetjg" meaning dry (Pacifique, 1934). The location had a post office from 1878 to 1914. Established as a civic address community in 2000.
